The estrogen shortage is real, with no end in sight.

Expect an issue at every refill. If there is a backorder on your RX, ask for:

  • transfer to another pharmacy (i.e. in a grocery store, Costco, Amazon, Optum, Birdi, Express Scripts)

  • other patch options:

    • a weekly patch at same dose

    • weekly or twice weekly at double dose; you can cut in half to equal 0.025-0.05mg patches

    • combined estradiol/progestin (not progesterone) weekly or semi-weekly patches (ClimaraPro or CombiPatch)

  • other delivery options (dosing may be slightly different that patch):

    • daily estradiol gels (packets or metered pump), dosing may determine best option

    • daily estradiol mist

    • daily estradiol pill

      • an excellent alternative for most, caution with history of clots, clotting disorder, stroke, heart disease, smoking

    • vaginal ring (FEMRING not ESTRING) every 90 days (may require prior authorization/manufacturers coupon)

  • Compounded hormones, pellets, or injections are not comparable or safe alternatives.
